SSD endurance: DWPD vs TBW

For a database, virtualization host or storage array, capacity is only part of the requirement. Start with how much data the application writes each day.

What is the difference between DWPD and TBW?

TBW describes the total terabytes written covered by an SSD endurance rating. DWPD expresses that write allowance as full drive capacities per day over a stated rating period. Compare both with the same capacity, period and workload assumptions; neither number describes read speed or guarantees how long an individual drive will last.

How do you convert TBW to DWPD?

DWPD = TBW ÷ (drive capacity in TB × 365 × rating period in years). As a hypothetical arithmetic example, a 3.84TB drive rated for 1 DWPD over five years corresponds to 7,008 TBW, or 3.84TB of daily writes. This example is not a specification or warranty offer for a ServerProcure product.

Do not compare two DWPD figures without checking the period. A higher-capacity drive can also support more daily written data at the same DWPD. Use decimal TB consistently when calculating, and keep any vendor workload assumptions with the rating.

What should a database or virtualization buyer measure?

Include normal daily host writes, peak write days and expected growth in the requirement. If storage is shared across several workloads, use the intended allocation per drive rather than dividing the total equally without checking the storage layout.

A useful inquiry separates endurance from other priorities: required capacity, interface, form factor, latency expectations and power-loss protection. A drive with adequate write endurance may still be unsuitable for the server bay or application.

Does a higher DWPD automatically mean a better SSD?

No. The useful choice is a qualified drive that meets the workload and platform requirements. When requesting alternatives, ask for the endurance rating of each exact PN and capacity, not just a series-level label such as read-intensive or mixed-use.

Send the existing drive PN if this is a replacement. For a new deployment, include a short workload summary and the required daily write allowance. Final product selection and commercial warranty terms should be evaluated separately.
