RDIMM vs UDIMM: which memory does your server need?
Two modules with the same capacity and transfer rate can belong to different memory types. Match the server requirement before shortlisting a part number.
Can RDIMM and UDIMM be used interchangeably?
No. RDIMM is registered memory; UDIMM is unbuffered memory. The platform must support the requested module type. ECC alone does not identify that type because UDIMMs can also support ECC. DDR5 RDIMMs and UDIMMs have different keying and are not interchangeable. Follow the server memory guide rather than selecting by capacity or pin count alone.

Why is “DDR5 ECC memory” an incomplete request?
Generation, capacity, speed and ECC do not describe the complete module. Registered and unbuffered designs serve different platform requirements. Do not mix module types or assume two DDR5 modules fit the same slot.

Where should you start for an existing server?
Record the full server model, processor configuration and existing module PN, including its suffix. Then consult the platform memory guide for supported module types, capacity limits and population rules. A photograph of the installed label can help clarify a difficult-to-read part number.
For a fleet upgrade, separate the desired capacity per server from the total module order quantity. Include the number of occupied slots and note whether each server has the same installed configuration. Those details are more useful than a request for a generic memory speed.
What if a matching part number is unavailable?
Ask for an alternative as a separate proposed line item, keeping the original requested PN in the inquiry. Compare module type, generation, capacity, transfer rate and rank organization, then check the proposal against the target platform.
An alternative is a candidate for evaluation, not an automatic compatibility guarantee. Make clear whether the requirement is an exact replacement or a planned configuration change so the quotation can preserve that distinction.
